National Honor Society
About
The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginning in 1921.
Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in NHS activities. NHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. territories, and Canada. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.
Membership
Membership for the NHS is based on Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. Only juniors and seniors are invited to be inducted, but freshmen and sophomores need to prepare ahead of time, as the qualifying process starts with ninth grade. A GPA of 3.8 on a weighted scale of 5.0 is the first criteria that must be met. When students meet that goal, then they must demonstrate leadership and service in the school and community through active involvement in clubs and organizations, particularly in community service hours, obtaining a minimum of 45 hours before they can be considered for membership. These hours may begin the summer before their freshman year of high school. Finally, the students must demonstrate worthy character, recognized by the faculty and individual community members as individuals of honor and strong personal discipline. Any student with a record of cheating or serious disciplinary infractions cannot be a member of the NHS. In addition, eligible students must have earned credit in at least 6 courses on our campus and students moving into Horry County Schools must complete one full semester at CFHS before eligibility is attained.
