The mathematics courses available at Carolina Forest are grouped into four categories. The category chosen by each student is best based on the student’s prior performance in mathematics and his or her intensions following high school graduation. Students may change between categories based on performance. The four categories are: Mathematics for the
Technologies, College Preparation, Honors, and Advanced Placement.
Courses within these categories are:
MT-1 and 2 courses focus on one and two variable equations with particular emphasis on applications of linear and quadratic functions. MT-3 is a geometry based course, again stressing applications relevant to technology based job skills. MT-4 is a statistics course which also is oriented toward technology based job skills. Students completing these courses will normally enter a 2-year college or technical school or enter the workforce following graduation.
College preparation courses:
These courses are designed to prepare students for admission to a 4-year college.
Honors courses:
Algebra-1 Honors is normally offered at the middle school level. These courses are designed to meet the needs of student’s who demonstrate advanced abilities in mathematics and are willing to participate in an accelerated course of study. Each course contains topics not covered in the corresponding college preparation course. These courses prepare students for admission to highly selective 4-year colleges.
Advanced Placement:
These courses are equivalent to college level calculus and statistics. The majority of 4-year colleges award college credit for successful completion of the course and the College Board’s Advanced Placement test.
