As one of the largest departments in the school, the English Department offers much more than just a typical language arts curriculum. Students enroll in an English class each year of high school, but the options provided by this department enable each student to find just the right mix of challenge and success in each grade level. In addition, students can enroll in Creative Writing I or II, working with our literary magazine to create a written memory of their year or writing for competition and publication. If students enjoy reading, they may sign up for African-American Literature. Additionally, they may pursue a path of journalism with our award-winning newspaper or broadcast studio. Juniors and seniors may opt for SAT classes as they prepare for the SAT or ACT. Advanced Placement classes, such as Literature and Composition and Language and Composition, offer students the opportunity to earn college credit in the 11th and 12th grades. National, state, and district standards form the basis of instruction in all of our classes to enrich the learning experiences of all students.
