Functions of the School Improvement Council
The School Improvement Councils were initiated by the state of South Carolina as a means of restoring the influential voice of parents and community members in the education of their children. The School Improvement Council at Carolina Forest High School consists of three parents, three teachers, four students (two elected and two appointed by the principal), up to three representatives appointed by the principal, the school principal, and two ex-officio members appointed by the principal. Listed below are the general functions of the School Improvement Council at Carolina Forest High School.
The School Improvement Council advises the principal about the spending of state funds. The council assists the school administration in monitoring and evaluating annual improvements, assists the principal in writing a summary report to the parents about the school’s annual improvement progress, and advises the school administration on the spending of incentive award funds. If the school received an unsatisfactory rating on the state report card, the council would participate in writing a revision of the school improvement plan outlining how the school would better improve student achievement.
In conjunction with the school principal, the School Improvement Council also writes the narrative for the school report card. The narrative is submitted to the S.C. Department of Education in May or June of each year as part of the summer data collection for the school report card.
The School Improvement Council meets a minimum of eight times per year to review concerns about the school, to review current educational practices and consider changes to improve the academic progress throughout the school, to consider recommendations for change to district policies and procedures, and to consider any reasonable and prudent option which may improve the overall functioning of the school, its faculty, students, and/or the community at large.
The School Improvement Council at Carolina Forest High School generally meets the first Thursday of each month throughout the school year. The time and location of these meetings, which are open to the public, can be obtained by calling the school at 236-7997.
